Dry January Profile: Meet Genevieve Brazelton of The Bitter Housewife
Posted on January 16 2020
Genevieve Brazelton, a former restaurant and PR industry vet, started tweaking drinks back in 2014. Launching The BItter Housewife, she and her husband brewed botanicals, roots and spices in an all-natural spirit-based blend for home bartenders, craft cocktail bars, and creative chefs. Their Aromatic bitters is delightfully complex, a testament to the duo’s culinary approach that sees bitters as the spice rack for cocktails.
Recently, the company introduced sugar-free, non-alcoholic Bitters & Soda in a can. It’s a delicious zero-calorie, caffeine-free sparkling option.
WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO OFFER AN ALCOHOL-FREE VERSION OF BITTERS?
Both Dan (my husband and co-founder) and I have been drinking less in recent years and our go-to is Bitters & Soda. We also started to hear from our customers that many of them were using our bitters in soda water more than cocktails. Given the recent trends towards drinking less, we figured it was time to bring the combo to more people.
WHAT”S THE FLAVOR PROFILE, AND HOW DID YOU SELECT IT?
We started with Aromatic which is a mix of baking spices like ginger, nutmeg, and cinnamon, balanced with a little dried cherry and the bitter of gentian and quassia. It's the flavor profile most people are familiar with for bitters.
WHAT HAS SURPRISED YOU ABOUT THE REACTION TO THIS PRODUCT?
How excited some people are that we've made this. We've gotten sincere thank yous for making our Bitters & Soda available. Not only is the can super convenient, but we're also making it with all real ingredients, not flavorings.
WHERE CAN PEOPLE BUY BITTERS & SODA, AND WHERE DO YOU PLAN TO EXPAND NEXT?
We're currently available at all New Seasons and Market of Choice stores, as well as The Meadow, World Foods Market, MadeHere PDX, and Hollywood Beverage. We're hoping to get into more bars and restaurants around Portland in the very near future and will be working on expanding to the Seattle area in the coming months.
